Too sick to go to school?

Not sure if you should send your child to school or keep them home?

Too sick to go to school gives parents advice on how to manage various health conditions and may be of use when deciding on how long to keep your child home to recover or to prevent spreading illness to classmates.

This information has been supplied by NSW Health and is not intended to replace a visit to your doctor if anyone in your family is unwell.

Removing head lice and nits

Mention head lice and most of us instantly develop an itch. You'll find these little critters at every school across Australia – and probably the world – at some point during the year. While head lice and nits, (the eggs of head lice) are certainly annoying and persistent, they're not dangerous. Here's everything you need to know to rid your kids of head lice and nits.

There are specialised salons that cater for the treatment and removal of headlice (eg. 'No More Nitz' located in Liverpool)

Good attendance for success

Teachers believe that for children to make the most out of their education and to form strong social networks they must attend school regularly.

School starts at 8.55am.

It is important for students to be at school on time to maximise their learning opportunities. It is a legal obligation that parents report all absences to the school. Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record.

Did you know that every minute late, and a day here and there away from school, all adds up? Check out the posters below to see just how much!

Every minute counts poster (PDF 479.6KB)

For more information regarding school attendance see the Department of Education’s website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/student-wellbeing/attendance-behaviour-and-engagement/school-attendance

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Applying for Year 7 entry to selective high schools in 2021

Selective high schools cater for academically high potential and gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. Selective schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised teaching methods and materials.

Selective high schools are unzoned so parents can apply regardless of where they live. Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 12 March 2020.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2021, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from the High performing students website. Applications will open on this site on 8 October 2019 and close on 11 November 2019. The test will be held on 12 March 2020. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 8 October 2019.

You must submit only ONE application for each student. Remember the tear-off slip on the Intention to apply form (PDF 108 KB) is NOT an application and the school cannot apply on your behalf.

Application website opens: 8 October 2019

Tell Them From Me survey

Student survey

As part of our evaluation process, our school like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

More information about the survey is available at Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation website.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday 14th October, 2019.

Available resources:

Student survey Consent form located at Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation website

The survey is available in 23 languages.

Parent survey

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. To access the survey for our school, go to Tell Them From Me Parent Survey.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

Do not deliberately provoke or harass the birds as this may make them more aggressive.

Walk calmly through the area - DON'T RUN.

Protect your head with a large, wide brim hat or carry an open umbrella; you can place eyes on the back of hats and umbrellas which may reduce the likelihood of the bird swooping.

Wear glasses to protect your eyes.

Keep an eye on the bird as they are less likely to swoop if you look at them.

Remember…

STAY CALM. Accidents can occur when people, particularly children, panic. Swooping behaviour is temporary and will cease after breeding season. Magpies and Plovers are protected by the National Parks & Wildlife Act 1974 and harming these native birds and/or their nests is illegal.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Parent Online Payment (POP)

Parents can make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school's website by selecting $ Make a payment.

Parent/Carer POP Guide (pdf 68 KB)

Late payments can affect cut off dates/times for events. Parents should note if a payment is made after 5pm weekdays or on a weekend, the school will not see that payment until the second business day (eg. a payment made at 7pm on Friday evening will be on the report the school accesses on Tuesday morning). Unfortunately, in most case, late payments will need to be refunded or credited to Fees in Advance. To avoid disappointment, please ensure payments via POP are made 1 to 2 business days earlier than payment due date.

Permission Notes are required to be signed and returned to the office as proof of permission to attend events. Without a signed permission note, students are not eligible to attend excursions as per Department of Education policy.

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance). There is also a category called ‘Other' to cover items not covered in the previous headings, ‘Other' can be used to make a complete payment of a school Statement of Account.

When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

the students name

class

date of birth

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system.

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed.

Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child's account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

For any enquiries regarding the online payment process please contact the Office for assistance.

Selective High School 2020

Expression of Interest to apply for Year 7 entry to a selective high school in 2020

Intention to apply for 2020

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 14 March 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student's email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from mid-September 2018

The application website opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 9 October 2018.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

About the School Student Transport Scheme

The School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) provides eligible school students with free or subsidised travel from home to school.

The scheme includes:

Free travel to and from home and school on approved train, bus, ferry and light rail services during school term.

Discounted travel on buses between home and school with a School Term Bus Pass.

Free travel on NSW TrainLink Regional services and long distance coach services for boarding school students.

Subsidised travel to and from school in private vehicles in areas where there is no public transport available.

Students with a disability who are unable to travel to and from school under the School Student Transport Scheme may be eligible for assistance under the Department of Education Assisted School Travel Program .

How to apply

If you are ready to apply now, click here.

Code of conduct for school students on buses

It is every student's responsibility to behave in a manner that ensures the safety and comfort of passengers and drivers. This includes:

Behaviour on buses

Use appropriate language not offensive or racist language

Fighting, spitting, feet on seats, throwing things in or from the bus is not permitted

No eating or drinking (other than water) - unless for medical reasons or the bus operator gives written permission.

Offer seats to adults including people with a disability, elderly or expectant mothers

Do not push or shove other people

Do not bully or harass other passengers or the driver

Avoid attracting the attention of the driver except in the case of emergency

Do not play music at such volume that it may distract the bus driver or other passengers.

Safety on and near buses

Obey reasonable directions from the driver (e.g. where to sit or to remain in the bus)

Remain in your seat - do not move around the bus unnecessarily

If standing, remain behind the front passenger seat and keep a secure hand hold at all times

Keep bags and other items clear of the aisle

Do not allow any part of your body to protrude out of the bus at any time

Wait for the bus in a quiet and orderly manner - including at bus interchanges

Stand away from the roadside until the bus comes to a complete stop

Allow other passengers to leave the bus before stepping onto the bus in a single line

Wait until the bus stops before moving to get off the bus at your designated stop

Cross the road where and when it's safe to do so, use crossings/traffic lights where available.

Legal considerations on buses

Wear the seat belt properly adjusted and fastened, if one is available

Obey the law that bans smoking on buses

Ensure that buses are not vandalised - report any damage, e.g. graffiti and window etching, to the driver

Do not interfere with bus property, equipment and signage

Do not leave rubbish on the bus, or at bus stops or interchanges.

Using bus passes:

Show travel passes or tickets to the driver on boarding and to Authorised Revenue Protection Officers, NSW

Police Officers or bus company representative when requested

Use the travel pass only for its intended purpose - do not lend your pass to other students or borrow a pass from them

Swipe or 'dip' passes in ticket readers if available when boarding

If issued with a School Opal card, always tap on when boarding and tap off when leaving the bus.

Disobeying these rules may lead to the withdrawal of bus travel passes, banning students from travelling on buses and/or police prosecution and court action.
